Caption: Fernald Nature Preserve, Ohio, USA. This was once the site of Feed Materials Production Center, a uranium processing facility used to make nuclear weapons components. The facility ran from 1951 to 1989, when uranium processing operations ceased. The surrounding area was left heavily contaminated with radioactive waste. 4.4 billion US dollars were invested into the cleanup and restoration of the area. By 2006, the preserve had nearly been restored to pre-settlement conditions. Some radiation still remains in the water.
