Caption: Re-irrigation of Owens lake, California, USA. Workers are inspecting water pumps designed to re-irrigate the lake. Over 100 years ago, the lake was drained by the Owens river aqueduct to supply water to growing cities such as Los Angeles. Since then, the dry alkaline sediment of the lake has caused sandstorms of carcinogenic particles that pose a health hazard to surrounding areas. Re-irrigation of the lake is an effort to mitigate the damage caused by these storms.
