Caption: Re-irrigation of Owens lake, California, USA. These water pumps are designed to re-irrigate the lake. In 1936, the lake was completely drained by the Owens river aqueduct to supply water the growing city of Los Angeles.Since then, the dry alkaline sediment of the lake bed has caused sandstorms of carcinogenic particles that pose a health hazard to surrounding areas. Re-irrigation of the lake is an effort to mitigate the damage caused by these storms.
