Caption: Calf muscles. Artwork showing the muscles of the posterior lower leg. At left are the gastrocnemius muscles. They attach to the femur (thigh bone, top) and calcaneus (heel bone, bottom) via the calcaneal tendon (also known as the Achilles tendon). The gastrocnemius muscles flex the ankle and knee joints. At right are the soleus muscles. These lie beneath the gastrocnemius muscles, and attach to the tibia (shin bone) and the calcaneus, also via the calcaneal tendon. The soleus muscles flex the ankle joints.
