Caption: Hamstrings. Artwork showing some of the muscles of the back of the thigh, collectively known as the hamstrings. At left is the semimembranosus muscle, a flat, broad muscle attached to the pelvis and the tibia (shin bone) that flexes the leg at the knee joint. Right of the semimembranosus is the semitendinosus muscle. Mostly made of tendon, this muscle also connects the pelvis to the tibia and has the same action as the semimembranosus. At right is the biceps femoris muscle. It is attached at the pelvis, the femur (thigh bone) the tibia and the fibula (calf bone). When contracted it flexes the knee, extends the hip, and rotates the knee and hip outwards.
