Caption: Thigh muscles. Artwork of the muscles of the anterior upper leg. At centre is the rectus femoris muscle. It attaches just above the hip joint, on the pelvis, and runs down to the patella (kneecap), crossing both the hip and knee joints. It flexes the leg at the hip and extends the knee. Beneath the rectus femoris are the vastus muscles. These are three muscles that work together to extend the knee joint. They connect the pelvis to the patella, much like the rectus femoris. At right is the sartorius muscle, the longest muscle in the body. It runs diagonally from the outside of the pelvis to the inside of the tibia (shin bone). The sartorius flexes and rotates the hip joint, and also helps to flex the knee.
