Caption: Martha Carey Thomas (1857-1935), US educator. Thomas studied at a women's college, Sage College, Cornell University. Her further attempts at study at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Leipzig were impeded by lack of recognition for women at the time. She obtained her doctorate in philology from the University of Zurich in 1882. She returned to the USA and in 1884 began teaching at Bryn Mawr College, a women's college in Pennsylvania. Thomas was the second President there from 1894 to 1922, when she retired to travel around the world. She was also active in the National American Woman Suffrage Association.
