Quinoa, (Chenopodium quinoa). This plant is native to the Andean region of South America. It is grown for its seeds (often referred to as 'grain'), contained within the seed heads at the top of each plant. The seeds are high in protein and omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for human cardiac health. Quinoa has been grown for over 6,000 years and was an important food crop of native Inca people. It is grown today as a healthy alternative to wheat and maize and has potential uses for starch production and other industrial uses.
