Caption: Shikimate metabolite test. Plant physiologist using a dye test to detect the compound shikimate in plant leaves to determine whether a weed will resist the herbicide glyphosate. The blue colour is a positive test for shikimate, the anionic form of shikimic acid. This chemical consists of the cyclohexane ring, with three hydroxyl groups and a carboxylic acid group. It forms part of the shikimate pathway used by bacteria, fungi, algae and plants for the biosynthesis of aromatic amino acids. This metabolic pathway is not found in animals. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
