Caption: Prion analysis research. Chemists loading samples for analysis by nanospray liquid chromatography with mass spectroscopy. This advanced analytical technology characterizes prions with unprecedented precision and is being used in BSE research. BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy) is caused by abnormal prions, which are virus-like proteins. The prions cause fatal brain and nerve degeneration in cows, humans and other animals. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
