Caption: BSE diagnostics research. Biologist (left) and chemist (right) reviewing the results of a rapid immunoassay. They are developing new technologies for sensitive detection of BSE (bovine spongiform encephalopathy), surrogate markers, and risk factors. BSE is caused by abnormal prions, which are virus-like proteins. The prions cause fatal brain and nerve degeneration in cows, humans and other animals. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
