Caption: Brain tissue prion research. Histotechnologist preparing 5-micrometre-thick sections of tissue collected from TSE-affected animals. Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are caused by abnormal prions, which are virus-like proteins. The prions cause fatal brain and nerve degeneration in cows, humans and other animals. The sections are mounted on glass slides, stained, and examined by pathologists. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
