Caption: Wormwood oil extraction. Plant biotechnologist using a chloroform dip procedure to extract artemisinin from the glandular hairs of the leaves of sweet or annual wormwood (Artemisia annua). Artemisinin is used as a drug to treat malaria. Extracts from annual wormwood have also been found to have antibacterial and antioxidant properties. This research is being carried out by the Agricultural Research Service of the US Department of Agriculture.
