Caption: Gallstones. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen of a patient with a large gallstone (dark pink mass, upper centre left). Gallstones form when bile in the gallbladder solidifies and hardens. In most cases, a few small stones form and cause no symptoms. Occasionally, one or more large stones will cause a blockage in the bile duct and gallbladder inflammation. Surgery is required to remove the stones.
