Caption: Maxillary sinusitis. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan of the head of a patient with acute maxillary sinusitis (green). The maxillary sinuses are spaces in the skull that lie on either side of the nose, below the eyes. This patient's right maxillary sinus is inflamed and blocked by swollen lining and mucus. Sinusitis is most commonly caused by cold or flu-like illnesses, allergies, irritation of the airways by pollution, or dental infections. Symptoms include headache, nasal discharge, tiredness and weakness. Treatment is of the underlying cause. Painkillers and nasal sprays can provide temporary relief.
