Caption: Infected knee joint. Coloured sagittal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan of the knee of a patient with synovitis. Synovitis is an infection of the synovial (joint-lining) membrane. It is characterised by painful movement and swelling of the joint. This condition is associated with arthritis, gout, tuberculosis and trauma. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs, but also of the underlying cause.
