Caption: Bleeding in knee joint. Axial computed tomography (CT) scan of a patient's knee with haemarthrosis (blood in the joint space). This is a result of trauma to the knee that has damaged the space between the patella (knee cap, white at top) and femur (thigh bone, white at centre). However, heamarthrosis can also occur spontaneously in patients with haemophilia (impaired blood clotting). Blood (grey) can be seen pooling in between the bones of the joint. Haemarthrosis causes pain, swelling and impaired movement. If left untreated, destruction of the joint and growth of bone cysts may occur. Treatment is by surgical extraction of the fluid, or in extreme cases by surgical removal of the joint lining.
