Bone cancer, X-ray

Rights Managed

Bone cancer. Frontal X-ray of the pelvis of a patient with an osteosarcoma on the left femur (thigh bone, bottom right). An osteosarcoma is a malignant (cancerous) tumour arising from mesenchymal cells inside bone. This is an aggressive cancer as it metastasises (spreads) quickly throughout the body. Osteosarcomas usually occur in children and adolescents who are still growing. Treatment is by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, followed by surgery to remove the tumour. If the tumour is too large, the affected limb may be amputated.
