Caption: Bone cancer. Coloured lateral X-ray of the knee of a patient with a parosteal osteosarcoma (bone cancer, mass at top right) on the femur (thigh bone). This is a malignant cancer arising from the periosteum, a fibrous membrane that covers the surface of all bones. Parosteal tumours are considered less dangerous and easier to manage than other bone cancers, as they are slower-growing and less invasive. Treatment is by surgical removal of the tumour. Prognosis is generally good, as this type of tumour rarely metastasises (spreads) to other parts of the body.
