Caption: Shingles rash on the face. Shingles is a disease caused by the varicella zoster virus, which also causes chicken pox. The virus infects nerves and the skin around them. It causes a painful rash which develops into itchy blisters. The virus can remain dormant (inactive) in the body for several years, and resurface when immunity is compromised. This could be due to old age, stress, or an autoimmune disease such as AIDS. There is no cure for shingles, but symptoms tend to disappear after four to eight weeks.
