Caption: Mesothelioma lung cancer. Composite image of a computed tomography (CT) scan and a coloured positron emission tomography (PET) scan of the thorax and abdomen. This patient has a malignant pleural mesothelioma (dark grey on CT scan, red/orange on PET scan) in the right lung. This is a cancerous tumour in the lining of the lungs (mesothelium), caused by exposure to asbestos. Asbestos is a soft crystalline material that was used in construction and insulation. Many people exposed to asbestos dust develop lung cancers and disorders several years later. Asbestos is now banned, but it is still present in some old buildings.
