Air molecules, computer artwork. For every oxygen molecule (red) present in air, there are approximately 4 nitrogen molecules (blue). Both elements form molecules of two atoms, held by covalent bonds; nitrogen forms a triple bond and oxygen a double bond. Although nitrogen and oxygen are its major components, air also contains small amounts of water vapour, carbon dioxide and methane.
