Ammonia molecules, computer artwork. Ammonia molecules consist of a single nitrogen atom (blue) and 3 hydrogen atoms (green), bonded covalently. At room temperature and pressure, ammonia is a colourless gas with a distinctive strong smell. It is used in the manufacture of fertiliser and explosives, and in solution to produce household glass cleaners.
