Caption: Engraving of the French naturalist Etienne Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire (1772-1844). Saint-Hilaire was professor of zoology at the Museum of Natural History in Paris between 1793 and 1840. He established the principle of 'unity of composition', believing that all animals shared a body plan, with homologous parts varying in shape and size.
