Caption: Mount Vesuvius erupting. Engraving of Mount Vesuvius erupting in 1872. This eruption started on the 26th April and lasted for several days. It killed 20 spectators and destroyed a number of villages. It was followed by a caldera collapse on 1st May. Vesuvius is most famous for its destruction of the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in 79 AD, but has erupted many times over the centuries.
