Caption: Engraving of Alexandrine Tinne (1835-1869), Dutch explorer, riding on a camel. Tinne was a wealthy heiress who attempted to map the White Nile and its tributaries. In 1862 she was the first Western woman to navigate the White Nile in Sudan, collecting important ethnographic and botanical specimens during the expsedtion. She was murdered in Libya, while travelling to Lake Chad.
