Caption: Water molecules in water vapour, computer artwork. Water vapour is a gaseous phase of water. Water molecules are formed of a single oxygen atom (red) and two hydrogen atoms (green), bonded covalently. Water vapour forms when water evaporates, when a molecule becomes sufficiently energetic to leave the liquid water and enter a gaseous phase. As each evaporated molecule takes with it a quantity of energy, the average energy of the molecules left behind in the liquid is lowered. As a result, the liquid will cool.
