Caption: The image shows great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo) used to catch fish in a lake near Dali, Yunnan province, China. To control the birds, the fishermen tie a snare near the base of the bird's throat. This prevents the birds from swallowing larger fish, which are held in their throat or bill. When a cormorant has caught a fish in its throat, the fisherman brings the bird back to the boat using a pole and net and removes the fish from the birds bill or throat. The birds are often used in groups and the bird who catches the fish is rewarded by the fisherman. Cormorant fishing is however primarily a tourist attraction and is no longer practiced on a large scale.
