Caption: Ebola disease outbreak, Democratic Republic of Congo. Health official and local during the first outbreak of Ebola virus disease. The disease first appeared simultaneously in Yambuku, Democratic Republic of Congo (then Zaire), and Nzara, Sudan. EVD is a severe and often fatal disease with symptoms including fever, fatigue, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhoea and haemorrhaging (internal bleeding). It is spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. There is no cure for the disease, but three quarters of patients can recover if provided with sufficient medical support. The total number of cases in Democratic Republic of Congo in 1976 was 318, with a death rate of 88 per cent.
