Caption: X-ray of the elbow of a patient with gout. Gout is a disorder of uric acid metabolism by the kidneys. It can result in deposits of monosodium urate crystals in joints and nearby connective tissues, producing painful inflammation. In this case it has caused a hygroma (a fluid-filled swelling), some erosion of the bone of the elbow, and an enthesophyte (an abnormal bony projection) seen at the point of the elbow. Treatment is with anti-inflammatory drugs and changes in diet.
