Caption: Paget's bone disease. Coloured X-ray of a patient's forearm showing elongation, deformation and fracture of the radius (forearm bone, left). The ulna is normal. Paget's bone disease is a disorder of bone production where the normal rate of bone turnover is disturbed. In the later stages of the disease, bone is made faster than it is broken down. This leads to the formation of thick, but structurally weak, painful areas of bone. Treatment is by pain relief and taking bisphosphonates, which are thought to promote healing of bone lesions. Severely deformed bones may require corrective surgery.
