Caption: Scientist examining an electrophoresis plate used to sequence the genome of the Ebola virus under an ultraviolet light. Electrophoresis is a technique used to analyse the molecular composition of nucleic acid samples. Ebola virus causes Ebola virus disease, a severe and often fatal disease with symptoms including fever, fatigue, muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhoea and haemorrhaging (internal bleeding). It is spread through direct contact with infected bodily fluids. There is no cure for the disease, but three quarters of patients can recover if provided with sufficient medical support. Photographed in The Pasteur Institute of Bangui, Central African republic.
