Caption: Alexander Nicolaus Scherer (1771-1824), German chemist and pharmacologist. Scherer was born in St Petersburg, but studied at the University of Jena and in 1800 became a professor of physics at the University of Halle. He went on to hold positions as a professor of chemistry (Dorpat, 1803) and as a professor of chemistry and pharmacy (from 1804). He was elected a full member of the St Petersburg Academy of Sciences in 1815. He edited several journals, and his works include 'Versuch einer popularen Chemie' (Essay on Popular Chemistry, 1795). This engraving, dating from 1800, is by Friedrich Wilhelm Nettling (active 1793-1824).
