Caption: Liver cirrhosis. Coloured axial computed tomography (CT) scan of the abdomen of a patient with cirrhosis of the liver (red) with right lobe atrophy (wasting). The stomach with contents is on the right. Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver as a result of long-term liver damage, in this case caused by alcoholism. Cirrhosis progresses slowly and often does not cause symptoms until it is advanced and liver failure sets in. Symptoms include tiredness, oedema (fluid build-up in the body), weight loss, and jaundice. Cirrhosis can be slowed by abstinence from alcohol; tissue damage is usually permanent.
