Caption: Hubble as high school coach. At upper centre is future US astronomer Edwin Powell Hubble (1889-1953), in his role as Albany High School coach with his basketball team. Hubble played basketball himself at school and university, leading the University of Chicago's basketball team to the national title. After studying law at Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar, Hubble returned to the USA and from 1913 taught for a year at the New Albany High School in New Albany, Indiana, where he coached the boys' basketball team. He then retrained as an astronomer and became famous for his Hubble's law (1929), a key aspect of Big Bang theory and an expanding universe.
