Caption: Cervical cancer. Light micrograph (LM) of a section of a large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the uterine cervix. This is a rare and aggressive malignancy with poor prognosis even in its early stage, despite multimodality treatment strategy. Most patients with early stage disease develop metastatic disease. Frequent metastatic sites include the central nervous system, lung, and bone. The mitotic index (red staining nuclei) is an important prognostic factor predicting both overall survival and response to chemotherapy in most types of cancer and is defined as the ratio between the number of cells in mitosis and the total number of cells. The higher the mitotic count, the more likely the tumor is to have metastasized (spread). Magnification: x250 when printed at 10 centimetres wide. Human tissue.
