Caption: German U-boat chasing merchant ship. German submarine U-28 chasing the Dutch steamer 'Zaanstrom' in the North Sea. The Zaanstrom was captured on the 18th March 1915, and taken to Zebrugge, Belgium. During World War I (1914-1918) German U-boats were used to attack merchant shipping in an attempt to starve the Allies. U-28 sank on 2nd September 1917, after the ship it was shelling (the British Olive Branch) exploded.
