Caption: Clams being rinsed before undergoing a 48 hour cleansing process, known as depuration. During depuration the clams are bathed in a continual flow of disinfected seawater. The clams syphon this water, resulting in them purging any contaminants. After 48 hours samples from the clams are tested for contamination and if clean are passed for human consumption. Photographed at the J.T. White Clam Depuration Plant in New Jersey, USA.
