Caption: Prosthetic joint testing. Engineers using holographic interferometry to measure the roughness of the surface of a prosthetic knee joint. The prosthetic joint is in the black box at left. A laser is aimed at the joint, via a series of mirrors, and the light reflected from the joint is collected and used to form a hologram. Any irregularities in the surface of the joint will show as interference on the hologram. Photographed at the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health, Mechanics and Material Laboratory, USA, in 1987.
