Caption: Potassium burning in water. When water and metallic potassium come into contact they react to form potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas. The reaction is exothermic, or heat-producing. Enough heat is generated to melt the potassium and ignite the hydrogen. The flame shows the typical purple colour of potassium ions. This reaction is characteristic of the Group I elements of the periodic table.
