Caption: A view of the Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill (BPPM) in the Irkutsk Region, Russia. The mill was commissioned in 1966. It is located on the shores of the world's deepest body of fresh water, UNESCO -protected Baikal Lake. The mill has dumped millions of tonnes of toxic effluent into the lake every year. Located in the town of Baikalsk, the mill has now closed, after many years of campaigning by environmental and nature conservation organisations.
