Caption: Plasma-assisted desorption ionisation (PADI) probe. This is a technique that is used to determine the chemicals present on a surface. A low power atmospheric pressure radio frequency plasma is directed at the sample surface. Molecules on the surface are ionised and released. They are collected by a mass spectrometer inlet close to the sample and analysed. The plasma beam used is cold and so can be used on biological tissue without damaging it. Photographed at the National Physical Laboratory, Teddington, UK.
