Caption: Orientia tsutsugamushi infection. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a peritoneal mesothelial cell infected with Orientia tsutsugamushi bacteria. The bacterium is budding from the surface of the mesothelial cell, enveloped by the host cell's plasma membrane. O. tsutsugamushi is the causative agent of scrub typhus, which is transmitted to humans through the bite of larval trombiculid mites. The bacteria attack endothelial cells of blood vessels, resulting in vasculitis (inflammation of the blood vessels). The disease is characterised by the formation of a cutaneous ulcerative lesion at the site of the mite bite. This sample used mouse tissue.
