Caption: Herpes virus particles, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). This sample depicts three icosahedral-shaped virus particles (virions). The staining technique used here distinguishes between virion capsids with no DNA (dark centre, where the stain has penetrated) and virion capsids with DNA present (light centre, no stain present). The herpes family of viruses cause a range of disease in humans, such as cold sores and genital herpes (herpes simplex viruses) and shingles (herpes zoster virus). These are herpes simplex viruses.
