Caption: MOIRE spy satellite. Artwork of the MOIRE (Membrane Optical Imager for Real-Time Exploitation) spy satellite in Earth orbit. This satellite is a design proposed in 2013 by DARPA (the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency), an agency of the US Department of Defence. It acts as a space telescope, with its imaging membrane (centre right) unfolding in orbit to a diameter of 20 metres. It would be able to view up to 40 percent of the Earth's surface at once in high resolution. The satellite is passing over north-western Europe and the northern Atlantic.
