Caption: Recycling centre, San Francisco, California, USA. This is Recycle Central, operated by the recycling company Recology on Pier 96. This site sorts waste into 16 different streams and commodities according to the material being recycled. Large containers of recovered materials are shipped daily to paper mills, glass factories, and other manufacturing sites that purchase specific recycled materials. Designed and constructed in partnership with the City of San Francisco, this site opened in 2002. The aim is to achieve zero waste by 2020. Photographed in 2014.
