Caption: Waste sorting at a recycling centre. Waste unloaded here is being placed onto conveyor belts by bulldozers. It will then be sorted by hand and machines according to the material being recycled. The recovered material is transported to paper mills, glass factories, and other manufacturing sites. Photographed at Recycle Central, operated by the recycling company Recology on Pier 96 in San Francisco, California, USA. Designed and constructed in partnership with the City of San Francisco, this site opened in 2002. The aim is to achieve zero waste by 2020.
