Caption: Skeletal muscle tissue. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a longitudinal section through skeletal muscle tissue, showing mitochondria (bulges) interspersed between the myofibrils (bundles running vertically down the image). The myofibrils consist of the contractile filaments actin and myosin. The most prominent horizontal bands across the myofibrils are the Z lines (light grey bounded by dark grey). The interval between Z lines is a sarcomere, the basic muscle contraction unit. Also visible (dark areas) are the membranes called the transverse tubule system and the sarcoplasmic reticulum. Magnification: x5000 when printed at 10 centimetres tall.
