Caption: Inflammation response to a stent. Artwork of inflamed vascular endothelium and platelet aggregation around an expanded stent. A stent is a wire mesh tube used to keep open a blood vessel that has become narrowed. Its expansion can cause damage to the vascular endothelium that causes the activation of platelets, fragments of white blood cell. When activated the platelets become amorphous in form, with long projections (pseudopodia) that help them adhere to the vein and each other.
