Caption: Sir Richard Doll (1912-2005), British physiologist, with his wife Joan (right) and daughter Catherine. Doll was trained in medicine at St.Thomas' Hospital Medical School, London. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Army Medical Corps. Doll's research work was in the causes of cancer, specifically lung cancer and leukaemia. He was the first to prove a link between smoking and lung cancer. From 1983, Doll worked as a consultant at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund Cancer Studies Unit in Oxford. Photographed in 1979.
